What 2024 taught me about copywriting, clients & clarity

As I reflect on the past year, I feel truly grateful for the challenges, growth, and wins that have shaped my small business copywriting journey. It’s been a year of clarity – learning to align my work with my values, trust the process, and recognise the kind of clients who truly light me up.

Here are three key lessons I’ve taken away from the past 12 months.

Copywriter writing reflections in diary.

Relationships matter (and they can stand the test of time)

One of the highlights of my year was welcoming back a former client. They’d worked with me in the past but had taken a different direction for a while. I felt okay about this, as something told me it wasn’t the end of the road.

When they returned this year, it felt like a warm reunion and a wonderful reminder of the power of trust and relationships.

This experience reinforced something I’ve always believed: when you do great work and treat people with care, they’ll remember you. Even if you part ways for a time, there’s always the possibility of reconnecting down the line.

For small business owners, this is particularly meaningful - long-term partnerships and trusted collaborations can make all the difference.

It's okay to say goodbye

Sometimes, growth comes from letting go. This year, I made the difficult decision to part ways with a client whose needs didn’t align with my skills.

I realised they weren’t making full use of my expertise as a copywriter. Instead, I was being asked to focus on tasks that didn’t reflect the value I could bring. While it’s tempting to say yes to everything (especially if, like me, you worry about letting people down), I learned that staying true to your strengths and boundaries is far more rewarding.

The client was very understanding, and we parted ways on good terms, with the possibility of reconnecting in the future should they need tailored copywriting support.

Letting go opened up space for new opportunities that felt more aligned, and I have no regrets.

If you’ve found yourself working on projects that don’t light you up (or with clients who no longer feel like the right fit,) I hope this reminds you that it’s okay to make changes. There’s real power in trusting your gut.

Manifesting your ideal copywriting clients works (when you know what you're looking for)

In 2024, I set a clear intention: I wanted to work with more local clients who matched my ideal profile. I imagined collaborating with small business owners - especially passionate, skilled women who value creativity and connection.

And guess what? It happened! One of my dream clients reached out, and the project was everything I’d hoped for. I was so thrilled I did a little happy dance and immediately had to share the news with my family (my biggest supporters!) It felt like a moment worth celebrating, and their excitement matched mine.

Maybe you’ve felt that nudge too? To work with more aligned clients or finally trust yourself to ask for what you really want in your business. If so, consider this your sign. When you’re clear on what you want, it becomes so much easier to spot (and attract) the opportunities that truly fit.

Looking ahead

The past year has been a powerful reminder that running a small business is just as much about personal growth as it is about professional success. Relationships, alignment, and clarity are the foundations, and I’m excited to carry these lessons into the year ahead
